An investigative record of the architectural movement emblematic of the Soviet Orient
After World War II, Tashkent, Uzbekistan, was designated as the capital of the Soviet Orient, a vitrine of socialism in the East. Conceived by both local and Moscow architects, the distinctive quality of Tashkent modernism (1964-91) emerges from the tension between the Soviet Union's ambition for the city and the locals' endeavor to retain their city's character.
This volume is an outgrowth of the Tashkent Modernism XX/XXI project, a research and preservation effort organized around a conference and exhibition held in 2023. The conference's title, "Where in the World Is Tashkent," was drawn from the 2000 American Institute of Architects conference "Where in the World Is Chicago," and its organizers shared a similar aim in re-situating the city of Tashkent as a paradigm for modernist architecture.
The book consists of two interwoven layers. The first section contains a series of written and visual essays, while the second includes 15 building monographs, detailing their histories, protection inventories and intervention strategies. Case studies include the Cosmonauts metro station and the Tashkent outpost of the Vladimir Lenin museum. Altogether, the volume explores key themes related to the architectural, social and cultural history of Tashkent and its current condition. More than just another "peripheral case" of multiple modernities or a white spot on the world map of architectural modernism of the 20th century, this architecture--being relevant to the global cultural scene--reflects the colonial, postcolonial and, at the same time, decolonial aspects of the Soviet social and cultural experiment.

Essays that trace connections between the work of Turner Prize-winning artist Tai Shani and the intellectual legacy of Charles Jencks, one of postmodernism's most playful architectural thinkers.
In this newly edited collection of essays, leading writers trace connections between the unique work of Turner Prize-winning multi-media artist Tain Shani, and the intellectual legacy of Charles Jencks, one of postmodernism's most playful architectural thinkers.
Catalysed by Shani's exhibition The World To Me Was A Secret: Caesious, Zinnober, Celadon, And Virescent, developed for The Cosmic House in 2024, this far-reaching book draws upon the various mythologies metabolised by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. A surrealist exquisite corpse made real, the writings gathered here reanimate Frankenstein's Monster within Jencks' definition of Ad-Hocism, whereby the use of materials and objects for unintended purposes, might yield surreal results.
A collaboration between The Cosmic House and Strange Attractor Press, Cosmic Caesious, Cosmic Zinnober, Cosmic Celadon, Cosmic Virescent includes newly commissioned works by Anne Boyer, Annabel Frearson, Emily LaBarge, Bassem Saad, and Taylor Le Melle that explore themes of anthropomorphism, the tangled legacies of surrealism, and the Promethean impulse. The book also includes a foreword by Eszter Steierhoffer, Director of The Jencks Foundation, and an introduction and original text by artist Tai Shani. -
Searching for authenticity : Rustic architecture in America 1877-1940

Rustic Architecture in America 1887-1940 is a history of a series of misunderstood masterpieces, the log-based architecture that emerged in the Adirondacks and the National Parks between 1890 and 1935. It is a history of how both form and technology of construction were determined by the tourist industry and the railroads who built the buildings and the social and environmental damage caused by the larger process of which they were a part. Many of these buildings were constructional shams driven by romantic pretenses, but there is also in the best of this architecture something truly original.
It is also a history of how the rustic aesthetic transcended glib, mythic romanticism to produce a truly original architecture, how the unique conditions of the West merged craft with the industrial, of how its designers drew on the landscape of the West in combination with the European traditions of the rustic to create an original architecture and a unique way of building. Forty buildings are examined in detail. The text and the numerous original drawings unfold the story how the work was actually constructed in relation to its many enduring myths. -

Inspired by nature and imbued in local identity, culture and art, the Harbin Opera House is an outstanding example of architecture's ability to engage, transform, and delight. This gorgeous book takes readers through every step of the design and construction of the landmark building, which rises like a "snow dune" in a large wetland area. Philip Jodidio shows how architect Ma Yansong incorporated the city's surrounding wilderness and climate into a curvilinear design-a poetic melange of edge and surface, softness and sharpness. Hundreds of photographs highlight how the enormous diversity of materials and construction-not only aluminum and concrete but also crystalline glass and Manchurian ash-brought together to create an invitation to linger, to appreciate the landscape, and to feel warmly enveloped. Philip Jodidio also looks at the effect this "cultural island" has had on the city-briefly a Soviet outpost, recently invigorated by investments in the arts. An exhilarating look at the making of a cultural landmark, this architectural exploration illustrates the impact of a single building on a community, and the role good design plays in creating a harmonious and spiritual connection between the built environment, humans, and nature.

He created a body of work that has constantly evolved and transformed over decades. His best-known designs include the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art in Fukuoka, the Shenzhen Cultural Center Concert Hall, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, the Berliner Volksbank office building on Berlin's Potsdamer Platz, the Palasport Olimpico in Turin, and the Allianz Tower (Il Dritto) in Milan. Isozaki was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in 1986 and the Pritzker Prize in 2019.

Conceived in close collaboration with Arata Isozaki & Associates, the book features photographs, plans, model images, drawings, and watercolours from all periods of Isozaki's career. Arranged thematically, it follows key concepts of the architect's creative development from the 1970s throughout his lifetime. Introductory essays round off this comprehensive survey of an outstanding architectural oeuvre. -

ARGUMENTAIRE

An archive of a disappearing African architectural heritage, captured by the realist, reverent eye of Bullinger
Since 2008, German photographer Winfried Bullinger (born 1965) has traveled around Eastern and Central Africa, capturing the vernacular architecture of these regions. In this physical archive of his long-term project, Bullinger portrays a diverse array of African pastoralists' homes, including tents, open dwellings and huts. Despite their variety, the structures are all made from materials available directly on site; they are radically efficient and sustainable.
Implementing a silver-gelatin technique, Bullinger shoots with a large-format camera and honors the capricious natural light of day. Although he captures few inhabitants in his images, Bullinger records their many traces. Indeed, his photographs are born from a dialogue with the inhabitants and reveal architecture as a direct response, refined over centuries, to a people's specific environment and culture. Bullinger's conscientious formal and interpersonal decisions culminate in this valuable record of rapidly disappearing African architectural heritage.

A greatly expanded and updated trade edition of the much-lauded photobook about an iconic Johannesburg apartment building.
Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse worked at Ponte City, the iconic Johannesburg apartment building and Africa's tallest residential skyscraper, for more than six years, photographing its residents and exhaustively documenting the building--every door, the view from every window, the image on every television screen. A sequence of essays and documentary texts is also integrated into the visual story.
This expanded edition includes images not included in the original, as well as installation shots from the project's exhibitions around the world. In the essays, some of South Africa's leading scholars and writers explore Ponte City's unique place in Johannesburg and in the imagination of its citizens. What emerges is a complex portrait of a place shaped by contending projections, a single, unavoidable building seen as refuge and monstrosity, dreamland and dystopia, a lightning rod for a society's hopes and fears.
Mikhael Subotzky (born 1981) is a South African artist working across mediums including film, photography, painting and collage. Subotzky's work is held in public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate Modern, London, and the San Francisco Museum of Art. He lives and works in Johannesburg.
Patrick Waterhouse (born 1981) is a British photographer whose projects are often collaborative, shaped by close engagement with his subjects. His work is held in collections including the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Centre Pompidou, Paris. His most recent book is Restricted Images (2018)
