This fourth book in a series of monographs on projects by h2o architectes looks back at the Chapelle Charbon urban development project in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, part of a major transformation of north-eastern Paris and, in particular, the area around Porte de la Chapelle. The project proposed by h2o aims to transform a former indus- trial and rail logistics site perceived as a nuisance into a new destination, in particular by connecting all the former dead-end roads to open up the site. The project is based on the creation of a large park of over 6 hectares, delivered in advance of the construction of new housing and roads.
Carla Juaçaba développe sa pratique indépendante de l'architecture et de la recherche depuis 2000 à Rio de Janeiro, au Brésil. Son bureau participe actuellement à des projets publics et privés axés sur le logement et les programmes culturels. Elle a travaillé avec l'architecte Gisela Magalhães, principalement dans des expositions liées aux arts indigènes brésiliens et aux musées historiques. Parmi ses premières oeuvres, elle est connue pour une série de maisons - Rio Bonito (2005), Varanda (2007), Minimal (2008) et Santa Teresa (2014) - des scénographies d'exposition et surtout le pavillon éphémère appelé Humanidade, à Rio de Janeiro, conçu avec la scénographe et metteur en scène Bia Lessa conçu pour la conférence des Nations Unies à Rio de Janeiro en 2012. Elles ont créé un pavillon temporaire fait d'échafaudages récupérés dans les chantiers alentour, et surmonté de la phrase "The Future we Want". A jewel of Japanese residential architecture, presented through stunning immersive photographs and detailed fold-out plans
One of the great examples of Japanese residential architecture, the Yoshijima House has stood in the historic old city of Takayama for over 100 years. Built in 1907 after a fire and under the direction of Nishida Isaburo, the complex functioned as a residence for the Yoshijima family, a wealthy merchant household that brewed sake. The builders used luxuriant wood including elm, red pine and cypress: rich materials that were becoming more readily available as the Edo period gave way to the Meiji era.
Different sections of the main building served diverse functions. The large entryway and its adjacent rooms served as the shop entrance and the places in which business was conducted. An eight-tatami room known as a kazuki was where the Yoshijima family went about their daily, personal activities. The building's second floor was intended for guests and also housed a tea ceremony room and a Buddhist altar. Throughout the Yoshijima House, semitransparent shoji, or sliding doors, allow for gentle filtration of light throughout the rooms, while a skylight in the tiled roof provides greater illumination.
In the latter half of the 20th century, both Japanese and international architectural historians began to champion the Yoshijima House as a paragon of domestic architecture. Charles Moore praised it in the magazine Shinkenchiku, and Japanese building photographer Yukio Futagawa compared its significance to Athens' Parthenon. Although today it functions as a "living museum," the Yoshijima House is not stocked with objects that recall its occupants. Indeed, it is this bareness and simplicity that allows the building's incredible craftsmanship to shine through.
This oversized volume is based on the 1988 book Important Cultural Properties: The Yoshijima House. Unlike that original edition, the 385 full-bleed color photographs by Hata Ryoo are here systematically arranged, facilitating a complete room-by-room tour of the house. Thirty-one architectural plans, including six gatefolds, allow for true appreciation of the building in all its greatness.
This reprint of the notebook Album Punjab Simla. Chandigarh, Mars 1951 kept by Le Corbusier from his two-week visit in the area that would become Chandigarh, the new capital city of the Indian state of Punjab, presents his written or sketched memos and personal reflections as well as notes and schematic solutions elaborated during meetings. The Album Punjab constitutes a primary source for reconstructing the topics addressed by the small team of architects and governmental officials who in only a few days developed the outlines of the Chandigarh plan.
The spiralbound notebook facsimile is accompanied by a paperback volume featuring previously unpublished photographs taken by Le Corbusier's cousin Pierre Jeanneret during this early expedition. Jeanneret documented the landscape and people that the architects encountered upon their arrival - a scenario destined to totally change with the birth of the great city. A detailed commentary by architectural historian Maristella Casciato is also included. It reflects on the variety of topics assem- bled in the notebook and traces the story of these days in which the new capital city was planned.
Today, Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-91) is something of a cult figure of European post-World War II architecture. The Dutch Benedictine monk and architect dedicated his life to the search for fundamental principles of architecture, and his thoughts on numerical relationships and dimensional systems were highly influential in mid-20th-century architectural theory.
A House to Live With is the first book to comprehensively explore van der Laan's residential buildings. Sixteen of them, built between 1966 and 1985, are featured in full detail through photographs and plans newly produced for this book, and analysed with regard to their compositional and design principles. Essays examine the mathematical relationships of numbers and volumes that are fundamental to van der Laan's designs, alongside discussion of how he was influenced by ancient Roman architecture. Light is shed also on the interplay of house and garden and house and patio, and the positioning of the one large table in the house, which to van der Laan was of key significance.
