Situation des forêts du monde (édition 2011)
Collectif
- Organisation Des Nations Unies Pour L'Alimentation Et L'Agriculture
- 3 Mars 2011
- 9789252067504

Improving nutrition programmes. an assessment tool for action.

- 9789251054161
The purpose of this Assessment Tool (AT) is to contribute to strengthening community-based food and nutrition programmes. The ultimate objective of the AT is to help the users launch and develop a process to strengthen their country's ability to address the causes of malnutrition. It is generally agreed that we need to address not only the immediate causes of malnutrition, but also their underlying factors if we are to achieve nutritional well being and reach functional and productive capacity of a population. The methodology is divided into four sections covering programme design, the macroenvironment, the microenvironment, and sustainability. The AT is used for making suggestions for action following the assessment. Anticipated users are normally food and nutrition programme planners, but any number of individuals with planning and programmatic responsibility who are concerned about poverty alleviation and overall development can, and should, be part of the Assessment Team.

Based on information gathered mainly through national surveys, the study provides an overview of the main legal instruments governing the management of animal genetic resources at the national level. Relevant international and regional regulatory frameworks are also examined. As the policy debate on the management of animal genetic resources evolves in various fora, and as FAO develops the Global Strategy for the Management of Farm Animal Genetic Resources, the discussion on legal issues will take centre stage. The study aims to contribute to such discussion through a general assessment of the status of national regulatory frameworks and general recommendations for national legislation development.

(2 spiralbound volumes in a bookcase with a set of worksheets and a classroom curriculum chart with nutrition education learning objectives for students of different ages. Vol. 1: The Reader, 250 pp., Vol. 2: The Activities, 276 pp. Healthy, well-nourished and educated people are a country's most precious asset for achieving economic and social development. Access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food is essential for reaching this goal. However, this by itself is not enough. People also need to understand what constitutes an appropriate diet for health, and they need to have the skills and the motivation to make proper food choices and practice healthy eating habits. Helping people to do so is the role of nutrition education. Many eating habits are formed during childhood and they can last a lifetime. It is therefore important for children to learn the benefits of good nutrition and to develop healthy eating habits. Schools are an excellent setting for bringing nutrition education to children at an early stage and through qualified staff. FAO has prepared this Planning Guide to assist educators worldwide in establishing an effective nutrition education programme that encourages behaviour change. The material can be used at national or local level and is intended for use by a team of educators and health staff, including education inspectors, curriculum planners, teacher educators, teachers, nutritionists and health workers.

Integrated irrigation and aquaculture in west africa. concepts, practices and potential
Halwart Matthias
- Organisation Des Nations Unies Pour L'Alimentation Et L'Agriculture
- 23 Janvier 2006
- 9789251054918
This volume contains background documents and papers presented at the FAO-WARDA Workshop on Integrated Irrigation Aquaculture (IIA) held in Bamako, Mali, from 4 to 7 November 2003, as well as the findings of FAO expert missions on IIA in the West Africa region. The rationale for IIA development lies in its potential to increase productivity of scarce freshwater resources for improved livelihoods and to reduce pressure on natural resources, which is particularly important in the drought-prone countries of West Africa where water scarcity, food security and environmental degradation are priority issues for policy makers. Irrigated systems, floodplains and inland valley bottoms are identified as the three main target environments for IIA in West Africa. Many examples of current practices, constraints and potential for development of IIA are provided. Concepts of economic analyses of IIA are reviewed, and an overview of regional and international research institutions and networks and their mandates as it relates to IIA is given. Key factors for successful adoption of IIA - participation of stakeholders and support for local development, an integrated, multisectoral approach to IIA, and improved knowledge management and networking - indicate the way forward and are reflected in a proposal for IIA development in West Africa.

Plant genetic resources provide a basis for food security, livelihood support and economic development as a major component of biodiversity. The Second Report on the State of the World's Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture demonstrates the central role plant genetic diversity continues to play in shaping agriculture growth in the face of climate change and other environmental challenges. It is based on information gathered from Country Reports, regional syntheses, thematic studies and scientific literature, documenting the major achievements made in this sector during the past decade and identifying the critical gaps and needs that should urgently be addressed. The Report provides the decision-makers with a technical basis for updating the Global Plan of Action on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. It also aims to attract the attention of the global community to set priorities for the effective management of plant genetic resources for the future.

Salmonella and campylobacteriosis are among the most frequently reported foodborne diseases worldwide. Codex Alimentarius Commission agreed that guidelines for the control of both diseases in poultry was a priority and initiated their development in 2007. In order to continue their work the Codex Committee in Food Hygiene requested FAO and WHO to provide them with the necessary scientific advice. In response to that a technical meeting was convened, the discussions and the outcome of which are documented in this report. This volume contains information that is useful to both risk assessors and risk managers, governments and food regulatory agencies, scientists, food producers and industries and other people or institutions with an interest in the area of microbiological hazards in food, their impact on human health and food trade and their control.
